Abstract

Copper-base alloy parts are prepared for subsequent soldering operations by treatment first with an alkaline cleaning medium, then with a solution consisting of equal parts by volume of sulphuric acid, nitric acid and water, and then, to inhibit re-oxidation, with a solution of 0.5-16 oz. of a mixture consisting of, by weight, 65-85 per cent of sodium thiosulphate, 12-24 per cent of sodium tetraborate and 5-10 per cent of an alkyl-aryl sulphonate, in one gallon of water. The alkaline cleaning medium may be a solution based on sodium carbonate, hydroxide and phosphate, and a suitable alkyl-aryl sulphonate is sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate.ALSO:Copper-base alloy parts are prepared for subsequent soldering operations by treatment first with an alkaline cleaning medium, then de-oxidized by treatment with a solution consisting of equal parts by volume of sulphuric acid, nitric acid and water, and then treated, to inhibit reoxidation, with a solution of 1/2 -16 oz. of a mixture consisting of, by weight, 65-85 per cent sodium thiosulphate, 12-24 per cent sodium tetraborate and 5-10 per cent of an alky-aryl sulphonate, in one gallon of water. The alkaline cleaning medium may be a solution based on sodium carbonate, hydroxide and phosphate, and a suitable alkyl-aryl sulphonate is sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate.
