Abstract
Aluminium of purity 99.85 per cent or higher and alloys consisting of Al of a similar purity with up to 2.7 per cent Mg are surface brightened by treating for 8 to 30 seconds at between 40 DEG and 90 DEG C. with a solution containing 1.2 to 9.5 per cent by weight of nitric acid, 2 to 14 per cent by weight of hydrofluoric acid, and 0.025 to 0.2 per cent by weight of Pb ions in the form of soluble Pb salts, the remainder being water. An inhibitor such as gum arabic may also be present in amount 0.4 to 2 per cent by weight, whilst the Pb may be added as the nitrate of fluoride. The preferred solution contains 4.35 per cent nitric acid, 7 per cent hydrofluoric acid, 0.125 per cent Pb ion and 1 per cent gum arabic. The treated surface may be subsequently oxidized chemically or electrolytically for protection, or be coloured. Specifications 693,776, 693,876 and 738,711 are referred to.
