Abstract
In phosphating metals primarily iron, at room temperature, the efficiency of the phosphating bath is maintained by adding either continuously or in batches, mixtures of zinc phosphate, zinc nitrate and/or an alkali metal nitrate, the P2O5:NO3 ratio being between 1:1 and 1:05, and containing oxidizing agent(s) in an amount not more than 1/10 of the NO3 added with the regenerating solutions, and optionally accelerators. Preferably the oxidant is NaNO2, its minimum being 1/200 of the NO3; while for baths in which P2O5:NO3 lies between 1:1 and 1:3 the regenerating ratio P2O5:NO3 preferably is between 1:0.8 and 1:0.7. In an example, a bath used at room temperature and containing per litre 20 gm. Zn, 20 gm. P2O5 and 40 gm. NO3 (P2O5:NO3=1:2) is regenerated with a solution having per litre 170 gm. zn, 240 gm. P2O5, 170 gm. NO3, 0.1 gm. Cu, (P2O5:NO3=1:0.73), and NaNO2 between 1/200 and 1/10 of the NO3.
