Abstract
1,059,634. Pickling stainless steel and iron alloys. SOCIETA EDISON. Aug. 2, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No.30772/63. Headings C7E and C7U. A composition suitable for use in the preparation of a bath for pickling stainless steel or other Fe alloys of high Cr content consists of a) from 50 to 99À5% by weight of a water-soluble inorganic fluoride, b) from 0À5 to 50% by weight of a water-soluble phosphate, and c) from 0 to 5% by weight of an organic base capable of forming complexes for substantially preventing the formation of a passivating layer on the steel or other alloy. Examples of a, b and c are a) NH 4 HF 2 , b) a mono- or di-basic phosphate of Na, K or NH 4 and c) morpholine, N-methylmorpholine, pyridine, α, #, or y, picoline or the fluohydrate of methyl-ethyl-pyridine. The composition is dissolved in either H 2 O or dilute HNO 3 to produce a solution having a fluorine ion content of 0À5 to 8% by weight and is used at a temperature of 20 to 70 ‹C.
