Abstract

758,371. Generating combustion products under pressure. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1953 [Oct. 15, 1952], No. 28467/53. Divided out of 758,345. Class 51(1). In combustion apparatus which comprises a duct 1 through which flows a fast-moving stream of air (or other combustion-supporting gas), a flame stabilising baffle 3 in the duct forming a sheltered combustion zone, and means 2 for introducing fuel into the duct, an open-ended tube 5 is disposed in the duct extending lengthwise in the combustion region. The upstream end of the tube 5 is disposed just downstream of the baffle and the downstream end is disposed in a region where combustion is substantially complete so that in operation hot gas flows upstream through the tube to the region near the baffle. The baffle 3 in Fig. 1 is of hollow conical shape and fuel is injected in an upstream direction through the injector 2. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the baffle is annular and of V-section and the tube is also of annular form. In Fig. 5, the baffle 9 is of conical form but the downstream wall 10 thereof is catalytic, the catalyst causing partly-burnt recirculated gas to complete its combustion. The catalytic surface 10 is thermally insulated from the baffle by the layer 11. The catalyst is a refractory material impregnated with platinum or palladium. An open-ended tube 5 is supported downstream of the baffle 9. In Fig. 7 the baffle 12 is of hollow conical form and the downstream wall 13 is perforated or porous, the baffle being connected by a duct 14 to suction so that the layer of gas adjacent the wall 13 may be sucked away.
