Abstract

748,716. Protective arrangements. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 27, 1954 [Aug. 28, 1953], No. 23872/53. Class 38(5) A capacitor installation comprises at least one main capacitor 1, a simulating capacitor 4 which is smaller but of similar type to the main capacitor and disposed so. as to be subjected to similar life conditions save that its dielectric is more' highly stressed, and an indicating device and/or protective device for the capacitor 1 which is brought into action by a large current flow on the occurrence of an over-voltage breakdown of the capacitor 4. The capacitor 4 is in parallel with capacitor 1 and in series with a relay 3, the capacitor 1 being in series with a supply conductor 2. When relay 3 operates, a circuit-breaker 5 closes circuit 6 to shunt capacitor 1 and limit the voltage across it. A current-limiting impedance 8 in the circuit of capacitor 4 serves to shunt capacitor 1 when circuit 6 is closed. Where capacitor 1 is a shunt capacitor, the relay 3 may operate to open a switch and isolate capacitor 1 from the supply circuit. A pair of arcing contacts 1 may be provided in parallel with capacitor 4 between which a heavy current may flow on breakdown of the capacitor 4. The capacitor 4 may be mounted on the casing of capacitor 1 so as to be in good thermal contact therewith. Replacements 10 for capacitor 4 may be arranged to be subjected to the normal stress by variable resistor 11, so that when required for use they will have been subjected to the same life conditions as capacitor 1.
