Abstract
553,734. Gas-blast circuit breakers. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. July 4, 1941, No. 8484. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1940. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast circuitbreaker with multiple interruption by means of a plurality of switch elements arranged in series, only the outer points of interruption are bridged over by impedances which are so dimensioned that the voltage to be interrupted is distributed as uniformly as possible over the individual points of interruptions so that the arc is certain to be extinguished. The residual current arising from the interruption of the arc is interrupted by the remaining points of interruption which are not bridged) over and at least one point of interruption at each end of the series of switch elements is bridged over by a resistor or capacity. The ends of the supporting tubes for the switch elements are constructed to act as resistors or capacities which may be graded and are provided with an external layer of semi-conductive material. High ohmic resistors in the form of tubes l', l<SP>2</SP> fixed to both ends of tubes f are connected in parallel with each of the two points of interruption a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> and a', a<SP>8</SP> of a series of points of interruption a<SP>1</SP> . . . a<SP>8</SP>, arranged in extinguishing chambers formed inside the insulators e arranged in between the tubes f. Capacities instead of resistors may be provided on the tubes f. The insides and outsides of the extinguishing chambers may be provided with layers of semi-conductive material and the walls of such chambers may be made of a material of high ohmic resistance. When condensers are used, those parts of the chambers surrounding the arcing contacts of the switch points may be used as condenser elements or the walls of the chambers may be made from a material having a high dielectric constant. An air isolating switch may be connected in series with the switch points arranged in series. In another form of circuit breaker, the outer points are located inside insulators and are bridged over by protective cylinders provided with insulating covers to act as condensers.
