Abstract
668,138. Testing circuit-breakers. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 2, 1950 [Feb. 3, 1949], No. 2776/50. Class 37. The invention is applicable to circuitbreakers having a plurality of gaps in series as well as to single-gap breakers. As applied to multi-gap breakers, an A.C. source A, Fig. 2, supplies current sufficient to operate the breaker, but the voltage is less than that normally applied; condensers CI, CII are connected across the gaps I, II, CI being onetenth that of CII, so that 11/10ths of the voltage of A appears across gap I and is sufficient to test its capacity to withstand the normal voltage. Reversing the condensers CI, CII permits gap II to be tested. Resistances may replace condensers, Fig. 3, not shown, and more than two-gap breakers may be tested, Fig. 4, not shown. As applied to a single-gap breaker, the generator again supplies a current sufficient to actuate the breaker but a voltage less than that normally applied; an auxiliary electrode G, Fig. 5, is provided in the gap and is connected to one of the contacts D; the movable contact E is adjusted so that arcing does not occur between G, E, and if G is at the correct distance from A, the gap between D and E is correct for normal working.
