Abstract
958, 911. Testing circuit breakers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 23, 1962], No.2478/62. Heading G1U. Apparatus testing a circuit breaker TCB comprises a first circuit supplying a low voltage test current thereto from an A.C. source V 1 in series with inductance L 2 and auxiliary breaker ACB, and a second circuit supplying a small additional test current followed by a high restriking voltage across the test breaker contacts, devised from a capacitor C 2 charged from a voltage source V 2 over switch S in series with spark gap G, inductance L, and capacitance C 1 ; through an artificial transmission line comprising a ladder network of plural L and C components simulating a shorted line. C 1 and L 1 have reactance values corresponding to those of the test breaker supply circuit, and closure of ACB opens test breaker TCB to simultaneously open ACB and trigger gap G to discharge C 2 , which supplies the small additional test current and the high restriking voltage tending to maintain the current; the conditions approximating to those in practical operation.
