Abstract
1,076,695. Testing circuit breakers. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. Oct. 22, 1964 [July 23, 1963], No. 29229/63. Heading G1U. A synthetic testing circuit for testing a circuit breaker having one or more low value shunt resistors is of the kind comprising a low voltage circuit whereby a fault current at low voltage is supplied to the test circuit breaker so as to create the required arcing conditions prior to current interruption, and a high voltage circuit, including a voltage injection source capacitor and an inductance, whereby a high frequency current pulse is supplied to the test circuit breaker immediately before the current interruption and the required high voltage across the test circuit breaker is applied immediately following current interruption; an auxiliary circuit breaker being connected in series with the test circuit breaker in the low voltage circuit and one or more capacitors being connected across the test circuit breaker to produce the required transient voltage conditions immediately after current interruption. According to the invention, when such a synthetic testing circuit is used to test a circuit breaker with one or more low value shunt resistors, the or each resistor is disconnected from across the test circuit breaker and is connected, wholly or in part, in parallel with the inductance in the high frequency high voltage injection circuit. In a parallel test circuit (Fig. 3) wherein the high current from a source nE and high frequency high voltage from capacitor Cs are applied to the test breaker T in parallel, the whole of the shunt resistor or resistors is connected across the inductance L in the voltage circuit. In a series test circuit Fig. 6 (not shown) wherein the high current from a source nE and high voltage from a capacitor Cs are applied in series to the test breaker T, only a proportion (1-n)R of the shunt resistor or resistors is connected across the inductance in the high voltage circuit. The remainder, nR, is connected in parallel with a capacitor Cr, which influences the transient voltage conditions after current interruption.
