Abstract

746,283. Ladders. MATTHEWS, C. H. July 14, 1954 [May 13, 1953], No. 13308/53. Class 20(2). An extension ladder elevator comprises a pair of hinged parallelogrammatic members pivoted at their lower corners to a fixed part and at the opposite corners to the ladder, the rear end of the ladder being pivoted to a fixed part and means being provided to move the members about their hinges to alter their shape and thus raise or lower the ladder. As shown the ladder 6, which according to the Provisional Specification may be as described in Specification 593,874, is mounted on a turntable 5 as described in Specification 746,282, by pivoting thereto its rear end, and the lower corners of the hinged members such as 3, at 9 and 3a respectively. The hinged member 3 is operated by a double threaded spindle 11 screwed into its pivots 13 and having a chain wheel 17 at its centre ; a frame 23 is supported by the spindle 11 and the corresponding spindle of the other hinged member arranged at the other side of the turntable, and carries chain reduction gearing coupling a hand wheel 28 to both double threaded spindles. A stand or cradle 30 is pivoted to the upper end of the ladder and may be locked in adjusted position by wing nuts 33 engaging quadrants 32.
