Abstract

745,937. Wrenches. PASS & CO., Ltd., E. Sept. 15, 1954 [June 17, 1953], No. 16655/53. Class 61 A tool for gripping pipes comprises a handle, one end of which constitutes a first jaw, a second jaw being adjustably secured thereto with one end extending towards the first jaw and the other end bent over to bear against a complementary receiving part of the handle to form a fulcrum for the second jaw, means extending through the first and second jaws for bringing the jaws together, a band of friction material secured at one end between jaws, the band after passing round the pipe passing out thrcugh at least one slot in one of the jaws. As shown a heavy canvas strip c is secured by rivets d to the face of the first jaw a<SP>1</SP> carried by the handle a. The second jaw b has a longtudinal slot f through which passes a stud g fixed to the handle a and screwed at the free end to receive a wing nut k. The jaw b has a wedge shaped end which engages in one of a series of grooves e on the handle. The free end of the strap c passes out through a slot h in the jaw b. In a modification the second jaw terminates opposite the first jaw one end of the band being held between the jaws by the adjusting stud which passes through a hole in the band, the other end being passed through one or two spaced apart parallel slots in one of the jaws. The second jaw has a peg which is located in an aperture in the handle to provide the fulcrum.
