Abstract
745,020. Axle-box mountings for railway &c. vehicles. METALASTIK, Ltd. Nov. 3, 1954 [Nov. 25, 1953], No. 26408/53. Class 103 (6). An axle box of a railway or like vehicle is mounted within a resilient system comprising a plurality of elements of rubber or like material which are disposed around the axle box so as to have a common centre for their axes of maximum stiffness. As shown, the end cap 15 and the end cover 16 of the axle box are formed with conical surfaces 17, 18 on which are mounted resilient elements 19, 20 each consisting of a rubber annulus 22 surface-bonded to a metal annulus 21. The outer surfaces of the annuli 22 are engaged by corresponding conical surfaces formed on two loose packing rings 23, 24 which are held in place between end plates 25, 26 and a main housing ring 27. The rubber annuli 22 are pre-compressed when the end plates 25, 26 are clamped together. In a modification a metal annulus is bonded to the outer surfaces of the rubber annuli 22. In a further construction the rubber annuli are replaced by sets of resilient elements in the form of flat sandwich mountings which may be bonded to a metal armouring.
