Abstract
735,161. Cooking starch. SPRINGS COTTON MILLS. Sept. 16, 1953 [Sept. 24, 1952], No. 25631/53. Class 121. Apparatus for cooking a starch slurry comprises a cylindrical slurry vat 2 connected, e.g. through a pipe 8 and pump 12, to a cooking chamber 18 from which cooked slurry is returned to the vat through a conduit 20 having a limb 48 pierced below slurry level by one or more openings 50 through which slurry is discharged substantially horizontally and tangential to the adjacent part of the vat wall so as to cause swirling and hinder coagulation of starch on the vat wall. The limb may have also one or more steam escape openings above slurry level and aligned with the submerged openings. The limb may have a horizontal part 52 disposed diametrally of the vat and pierced by openings 54, 56, which discharge slurry in the same rotational sense as do the openings 50. The limb may have a closed end. Specification 718,465 is referred to.
