Abstract

Textiles are treated with a dispersion made by diluting with water a solution of an N-alkoxyalkyl derivative of nylon, a non-ionic emulsifying agent and sucrose octa-acetate dissolved in an aqueous solution of an alcohol. Specifically the treatment is applied to nylon to increase its water-absorption. It may also be applied to wool to reduce felting and shrinking, to cotton to improve its abrasion resistance and to rayon or cellulose acetate. In examples: (1) a dyed nylon tricot fabric is treated at 105 DEG F. with a dispersion made by adding to water (a) a solution of an N-methoxymethyl derivative of nylon, the reaction product of 9-10 mols. of ethylene oxide with 1 mol. of octyl phenol, and sucrose octa-acetate, all dissolved in aqueous methanol or ethanol; (b) sulphated lauryl alcohol; (c) an aqueous dispersion of polymethylmethacrylate; and (d) citric acid; the fabric is then dried. (2) Nylon stockings are treated with a dispersion similar to that of example 1 but there is further added to the water the substance "dull powder", i.e. a mixture of barium chloride and water-soluble sulphates which produces a fine precipitate of barium sulphate.ALSO:A water-dispersible solution comprises an alcohol-soluble N-alkoxyalkyl derivative of nylon, a non-ionic emulsifying agent and sucrose octa-acetate dissolved in an aqueous solution of an alcohol. The solution when added to water produces a dispersion which is used to treat textiles (see Group IV (c)). In examples (1) a solution is made comprising an N-methoxymethyl derivative of nylon, sucrose octaacetate-and the reaction product of 9-10 mols. of ethylene oxide with 1 mol. of octyl phenol all dissolved in aqueous methanol or ethanol; (2) a dispersion for treating nylon is made by adding to water (a) sulphated lauryl alcohol, (b) the solution of example 1, (c) an aqueous dispersion of polymethylmethacrylate, and (d) citric acid; (3) a dispersion similar to example 2 is made but there is further added to the water the substance "dull powder," i.e. a mixture of barium chloride and water-soluble sulphates which produces a fine precipitate of barium sulphate.
