Abstract
Textile articles made of cellulose esters possessing free hydroxyl groups are immersed in solutions containing not more than 10 per cent by weight of a compound or mixture of compounds of formula <FORM:0672716/IV (a)/1> wherein X1, X2, X3 and X4 are the same or different and each represents a halogen atom or an acyloxy radical, the solvent being an organic compound which is a non-solvent for the textile material. Suitable silicon compounds are silicon tetrachloride, silicon tetra-acetate, silicon tetrapropionate, silicon tetrabutyrate and silicon dichlorodiacetate. The organic solvent may have a slight swelling action, but not enough to alter the other properties or appearance of the textile material. Preferred solvents are benzene, xylene, perchlorethylene and allyl chloride. The process may include an aftertreatment with a hydrolysing agent to remove any excess of silicon derivative, either with water, aqueous sodium carbonate, alkaline phosphates or ammonium hydroxide or with ammonia gas. The treated textiles show an increased resistance to heat. The process may be applied at any treatment or finishing stage. In an example threads of cellulose acetate are treated for fifteen minutes at room temperature in fifty times their weight of an 8 per cent solution of silicon tetrachloride in allyl chloride. They are then dried in air. Example III describes the use of silicon tetra-acetate in benzene.ALSO:Textile articles made of cellulose esters possessing free hydroxyl groups are immersed in solutions containing not more than 10 per cent by weight of a compound or mixture of compounds of formula <FORM:0672716/IV (c)/1> wherein X1, X2, X3 and X4 are the same or different and each represents a halogen atom or an acyloxy radical, the solvent being an organic compound which is a non-solvent for the textile material.
