Abstract
733,451. Non-woven fibrous webs. INTERNATIONAL CELLUCOTTON PRODUCTS CO. Feb. 25, 1953 [Oct. 30, 1952], No. 5259/53. Class 140. The fibres comprising a non-woven fibrous web are joined together at spaced areas with spaced, solidified deposits of adhesive composition in amounts of from 25 to 35 per cent of the finished product. As shown, a mat or web 10 of fibres which may be of cotton or other natural fibre, rayon or of synthetic material such as nylon, vinyon or acrylic ester is sized with a watersoluble sizing material 10 such as polyvinyl alcohol by means of co-operating rollers 14, 16. It is dried by heated rollers 21, 22, 23 and collected on roller 24. The adhesive, preferably based on solid polyethylene, and which may contain a small amount of microcrystalline wax, is fed as small particles from a hopper 26 on to a heated rotating printing roller 28 and forms a bead 29 against the doctor blade 30. The web is passed between rollers 28 and 31 which print it on both sides by a combination of intaglio and offset printing with a pattern of spaced areas, e.g. small rectangles. Rollers 28 and 31 are of the same size and are geared together. The printed web 33 is reheated by calender rolls 34 and 36 and stretched by rolls 37 and 38. It is then washed in a tank 41 containing warm water to remove most of the sizing material, conducted over a wire mesh cylinder 47 and sprayed with hot water from sprays 49, squeezed by rolls 52, 53, expanded laterally by expander rolls 56, 57 and dried in the drying apparatus 58. It may then be cut into strips for bandages, dressings as desired.
