Abstract
764,086. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials. CHICOPEE MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. March 27, 1953 [April 7, 1952], No. 8517/53. Class 140. A fabric composed of adhesively-united fibres is made by rebonding in its stretched state an oriented web of textile fibres that has been bonded by adhesive applied in a regular pattern and has then been stretched at right angles to the direction of orientation of the fibres in such a way as to displace the fibres angularly relatively to the adhesive pattern. The patternbonded web may be impregnated with an aqueous dispersion of a binder, stretched while wet, and dried while stretched. Alternatively, the pattern-bonded web may be wet with water, stretched while wet, and then re-bonded while stretched, or, in the case of a web that has been bonded by spaced small areas of adhesive, e.g. annuli 24, the web is stretched crosswise while dry to produce sinuous bands of fibres 20 and 22, and the stretched web is re-bonded by impregnating it or by printing with a second adhesive pattern which may consist of continuous or broken lines, e.g. 26 and 28. The lines of the second adhesive may be arranged diagonally, may form a zig-zag pattern, or a series of elongated diamonds or parallelograms. The procedures and adhesives described in Specifications 468,529 and 642,890 may be made use of. One or both printing operations may be effected by hot-printing with a thermoplastic adhesive as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,545,952. A web may be patternbonded with a polyvinyl acetate adhesive, and, after stretching, impregnated with a polyvinyl chloride emulsion. The adhesive used in the first pattern-bonding operation may be watersoluble, e.g. starch, polyvinyl alcohol, or carboxymethyl cellulose, and may be dissolved out after the second pattern-bonding operation which is effected with a water-insoluble adhesive such as rubber latex, polyvinyl acetate or chloride. The product may be united with an untreated or pattern-bonded fibrous web, e.g. by passing through hot rolls which melt the adhesive. The treatment of carded webs of viscose rayon staple fibres is referred to. Specification 744,839 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 688,985 and 693,711.
