Abstract
753,965. Reconstituted tobacco products. GENERAL CIGAR CO., Inc. Sept. 7, 1954 (Sept. 8, 1953], No. 25940/54. Class 130. A tobacco paste, of pulverized tobacco mixed with an aqueous solution of an innocuous binding agent such as a cellulose ester or an alginate as disclosed in U.S.A. Specifications 2,592,553 and 2,592,554, is deposited as a thin layer on a stainless steel belt 22 which carries it beneath hoods 26, 28 delivering warm dry air, as through screens 36, 44, at the temperatures and relative humidities specified below, the resulting dried sheet of reconstituted tobacco product being stripped from the belt 22 as by rollers 52, 54 delivering to a reel 56, preferably after humidification by a water spray 48. The paste is supplied between the adjustable nip of rollers 12, 14, end plates 16 and a scraper 18 being provided. Each hood 26, 28 has a blower 30, dust filter 32 and steam coil 34, and the hood 28 a water spray 46. The air in the hood 26 is of not more than 160‹F. temperature and 25 per cent relative humidity, and that in the hood 28 at least 10‹F. cooler but not below 110‹F. and preferably of between 12 per cent and 25 per cent relative humidity, the dried sheet emerging with a moisture content of about 12 per cent to 22 per cent by weight and having this increased to between 25 per cent and 40 per cent by the spray 48. A suitable tobacco paste described contains pulverized tobacco, fine glass fibres, a a plasticizer, diatomaceous earth and siliceous catalyst, made up with an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose. There may be several, e.g. five, spaced parallel ribbons of tobacco paste on the belt 22.
