[Also in Group XIX] Tabulating key-actions.-A tabulating device for typewriting, calculating and like machines has a single tabulator key by which both column by column tabulation and column skipping can be effected, separate means being provided for the release, and for the stopping, of the travelling carriage, and these are so arranged as to be operated successively in two successive stages of movement of the tabulator key. In one embodiment described, the stages comprise movements of the key first in one direction and then in the reverse direction. As shown, the tabulator key 2, on being depressed from the normal position, Fig. 3, raises a lower part of a stop lever 5 and disconnects an arm 11 from the carriage ratchet wheel. A projection 23 on the stop lever passes a cross-piece 19, Fig. 4, slidably mounted in slots 24 formed in the side arms of a locking bridge 20 pivoted at 21 to side members 7, and an end projection 16 moves away from a projection 17 formed in an upper part 5b of the stop lever, which is held in original position by a cross-arm 18 on the locking bridge 20. Release of the key 2 causes the projection 23 to engage the cross-piece 19 and pivot the locking bridge 20 clockwise. This releases the upper part 5b of the stop lever 5, Fig. 5, which engages with a tabulator stop and slides a guide 12 on which is a locking arm 26. Movement of arm 26 allows a further clockwise movement of the locking bridge 20 and the cross-piece 19 disengages from notch 23 on the lower part of the stop lever 5 and a return-spring 10 returns upper and lower parts of lever 5 to normal. The locking bridge 20 is returned by springs 25, and guide 12 by a spring 14.
