Abstract

713,191. Typewriters. BIRCHMEIER'S SOHNE, A. Sept. 7, 1951 [Sept. 26, 1950], No. 21156/51. Class 100 (4) A back-spacing device for a typewriter carriage comprises a spring-biased lever 5 pivoted to a fixed frame 3, and a pawl 8 pivoted on the lever 5 and carrying a roller 11 for engaging a ratchet wheel 1 to effect back-spacing when the pawl 8 is operated by an actuating rod 13. The lever 5 and the pawl 8 are assembled so that an obtuse angle is formed between two intersecting lines, one extending between a pivot 6 of the lever 5 and the pivot 7 of the pawl 8, and the other between the pawl pivot 7 and the axis 10 of the roller 11. The lever 5 is normally biased by a spring 15 against a stop 16 and a shoulder 9 on the pawl 8 rests on the lever 5. When the actuating rod 13 is moved, the shoulder 9, after a limited movement, engages an upright edge 5a and the roller 11 is then brought into engagement with the ratchet wheel 1.
