Spaced bottles 17 in upright positions are fed on a continuous conveyer 18 between a rotary label carrier 12 with peripheral curved pick-up surfaces 13 adapted by suction to extract labels successively from a magazine 32 and an endless band 19 driven in the same direction as the conveyor 18 by a roller 21 resiliently urged towards the carrier 12. the speeds of the conveyer 18 and band 19 and the peripheral speed of the pick-up surfaces 13 being substantially equal, so that labels extracted by the pick-up surfaces and rendered adhesive are rolled on and thus applied to. the bottles 17. Adhesive may be applied to the labels by a gumming roller 16 or, in the case of heat-activated adhesive labels, heaters may be incorporated in the carrier 12 or the pick-up surfaces 13 caused to pass near heated members. The bottles 17 are positively spaced in timed relationship with the movement of the surfaces 13 by rotatable worm 23. Suction is applied to each surface 13 through two separate. chambers 26, 27 and as the surface reaches the applying station, the leading chamber 26 moves out of influence of a common suction part 28 to cut off suction from the chamber as the rolling action commences, a similar action following in respect of the chamber 27. The application of the labels is consolidated by the band 19 pressing the bottles against a further resilient band 29, plates 31 being spring-urged against the bands. The label magazine 32 is arranged to oscillate about a vertical axis 33 in timed relationship with the movement of the pick-up surfaces 13 as described in Specification 723,131, so that during extraction the leading label is moving with a pick-up surface 13 in the same direction and at the same speed as that surface.
