Class 73 In a labelling machine of the kind where labels 11 are fed to the periphery of a carrier 17 rotating on a vertical axis and are subsequently rolled on to bottles 26, means are provided to gum the upper and lower margins of the label and, on the carrier, to rotate the gummed labels through 90 degrees so that they are applied with their adhesive margins spaced in the direction of movement of a carrier 27 that carries an ordered succession of upright bottles 26 to the applying station in timed relationship with the carrier. The labels 11 are transferred from a magazine 12 by an oscillating sucker 13 and a suctionfeed roller 14 to the carrier 17 where they are held with their edges overhanging the carrier by suction tubes 18. A gumming roller 19 on a gumming device 21 has spaced gumming surfaces 22 (Fig. 3, not shown) which gum the overhanging edges of the labels whilst they are additionally supported by a rubber belt 23 and a plate 24. As the carrier rotates further, suction on the tubes 18 ceases and is transferred to other tubes 28 which then rotate through 90 degrees operated at slots 36 by racks 29 (Fig. 3, not shown) worked by cams co-operating with the carrier rotating gear. At the applying station a pair of rubber belts 54 on pulleys 56 move over a spring- loaded pressure plate 57 which leads out from the carrier at 58. On the opposite side of the carrier a rubber rolling surface 59 presses the bottles against the labels, which have been tansferred from the carrier to the rubber belt 54 by cutting off the suction. If desired an airblast may assist the application of the label. Thermoplastic labels may be applied if a heater is used in place of the gumming device 21. Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) illustrate the arrangement of cams, channels, &c. by which movements of the carrier and suction operations are co-ordinated and controlled.
