1348612 Labelling machine AMF Inc 13 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 11568/72 Heading B8F In a labelling machine, labels are withdrawn from hoppers 1, 2, 3 by pairs of grippers 5, 6, 7 on a drum 4, and are passed to a transfer drum 8, on which axially sliding suction holders 12, 13, 19, 20 align the labels with those on axially fixed central suction holders 10, 11, and are then supplied sequentially to application heads 24 on a drum assembly 9. The labels are withdrawn from the bottom of the hoppers by pairs of suction nozzles 50 pivoted by cam means 56, 58, the grippers are operated by cam and lever means 60, and the sliding holders 12 &c. are operated by cam means 16, 17 acting against a return spring 18. The application heads 24 are mounted in carriages 28 on rollers 29 in circular tracks 125, 126 in discs 25, 26 which drive the carriages 28. The angle of each head 24 is controlled by a shaft 30 reciprocated by a lever 31 with a roller 32 running in a fixed cam track 133. The peripheral speed of the carriages is cyclically varied by links 34 carrying the shafts 30 and reciprocated by bell-crank levers 36 pivoted to the disc 26 and having follower rollers 39 running in a fixed cam track 233. In this way the labels can be removed from the holders on drum 8 at a lower peripheral speed than they are applied to packets carried by a drum, and the angle of the application heads is adjusted to that of the packet during the labelling process. Each suction sector 24 has a cavity 124 such that each pack enters the cavity and the label is applied over the end of the pack. The labels are gummed by a wheel 60 driven, as are drums 4, 8, 9 by belt gearing.
