In an escapement mechanism for typewriters or like machines of the kind wherein the typelevers 1 engage an arcuate universal bar 7 carried on lever arms 8 pivoted at 9, an edge 12 of the bar 7,-which is engaged by the type-levers 1, is inclined by an angle α to the plane of the pivots 4 of the type-levers. This ensures that type-levers 1 at the extremities of type-lever sector 2 engage the bar sooner than the typelevers in a central position. and compensate for the different distances from the pivots 9 of the bar to the point of engagement of a type-lever with the bar 7; this results in a uniform actuation of the escapement mechanism operated by an adjustable trip stud 14.
