[Also in Group IX] In a pressing sheet provided with carding teeth 2 for covering the platens of ironing machines or for use in hand ironing, a layer 1 in which the teeth are held is impregnated with a medium and subsequently hardened so that changes in shape of the pressing sheet during use are avoided. The teeth 2 may be stirrup shaped and may be mounted before or after impregnation of the sheet. The impregnating medium may be an artificial resin or a colloid silicate containing mixture (e.g. water glass) and infrared rays may be used for the hardening treatment. The sheet may be shaped to fit the press platen and held in place by means of springs having hooks passing through eyelets 5 near the edges of the sheet. The teeth may be arranged in rows, and apertures for the passage of steam may be provided in the spaces between the rows. The teeth may project to a greater height over certain areas of the sheet, thereby forming a pattern which is transferred to the material being ironed. The reverse side of the sheet may have an asbestos edging 8 serving to prevent steam escaping around the edge thereof. Obliquely arranged asbestos strips 9 assist in supporting the sheet on the platen.
