Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] A fire-fighting solution of water and wetting agent is produced by directing water under pressure in a fire hose through a passage 11 in an erodable tubular block 10 of, or containing a wetting agent, the block 10 being located within a tubular cartridge casing 12. Retaining washers 16, at one or both ends of the casing 12 and/or intermediate of the ends, have notches 18 which cause the water to swirl as it passes through the passage 11. The cartridge is retained in a cartridge container 13 by a spring retaining member 15, the container 13 being adapted for location within the outlet nozzle of the branch pipe of a fire hose (see Group XXIX). The diameter of the passage 11 is initially substantially equal to that of the outlet nozzle. The cartridge can be located in the fire hose other than in the branch pipe, or the cartridge may itself be in the form of a nozzle which can be attached to a hose when required and discarded after use.
