Abstract

721,532. Copy-turning. JAMESON, Ltd., J. L., and JAMESON, J. L. April 18, 1952 [Jan. 19, 1951], No. 30943/50. Class 83 (3). A method of reducing the diameter of work in a turning operation comprises traversing the work by two cutting tools which are moved in unison towards and past one another and in which the depth of cut of the two tools is also increased in unison as their cuts in the work merge. A workpiece 4, Fig. 2, having a high length/diameter ratio is supported between a headstock 2 and tailstock 3. Two saddles 5, 6 with transversely adjustable tool carriers 9, 10 are provided at the front and back of the lathe respectively. The saddles are traversed by screws 7, 8, and are moved in unison in opposite directions. The tools 11, 12 are set initially to give the same depth of cut and when the cuts merge the tools are automatically moved to increase the cut and continue past one another to the respective ends of the work; the second cuts may be finishing ones. Automatic control of the cut is provided by vertical shafts 16, 17, Fig. 3, carried by the respective saddles and provided with pinions 18, 19 engaging racks 13, 14 connected to the tool slides. The shafts are rotated by similar rack- and-pinion gearing at their lower ends, but the racks in this case are moved by hydraulic motors 22, 23, of known type which " followup" the movements of tracers 25, 26, sliding along a pattern 24. Abrupt shoulders may be turned on the work where profiled work is required.
