600,196. Boring and turning mills; copying- lathes. AKT. - GES. DER EISEN - UND STAHLWERKE VORM. G. FISCHER. Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15761. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] A vertical turning and boring lathe has two vertically movable slides, each provided with a transversely fed and rotatably adjustable tool slide to give a tool feed inclined to the work axis, one of the slides being arranged for internal and the other for external machining operations under the control of hydraulic copying devices. Tool-head 24 is arranged for boring or internal machining operations, and tool-head 9 is for external turning operations on a work-piece 12. The machine comprises a base 1 with uprights 2 and 3 carrying guideways for vertical carriages 4 and 20. These are moved vertically by rack and pinion gearing 18, 19, 33, 34 and provided with balance weights 6 and 29 respectively. Adjustment of these carriages may be made by hand wheels 48 and 50. An electric motor and fluid pump is carried by each of the carriages and pressure fluid is fed to rotatably adjustable slides 7 and 21 which. carry the piston-operated transversely moving tool-heads 8 and 23. The tool slides are adjusted to operate at an inclination to the direction of the work axis in order that rightangled shoulders may be copied. Feelers of rhomboidal cross-section on the slides contact templates secured to the uprights and control a spring-pressed valve to effect the copying movement, Fig. 4 (not shown). The boring tool-head may be provided with twin tool bars 25, 26, Fig. 3, and a pair of templates 37, 38, Fig. 1, by traversing the feeler for this toolslide downwardly against one template and upwardly against the other, the two tools operating on opposite sides of the work respectively right-angled shoulders may be copied at both ends of the work-piece.
