Abstract

719,688. Violin shoulder rests. GOLDBERGER, E. M. Dec. 11, 1952 [Oct. 22, 1952], No. 31372/52. Class 88 (2). The violin shoulder rest described in Specification 639,350 is modified by combining the clamping fingers and the supporting fingers in one element at each end of the rest. An element 31 or 32, Figs. 4, 5, 6, is screwed to the flexible plate 33 and is formed with two arms each carrying a rubber sleeve 4 to support the back of the instrument and a sleeve 36 to clamp the side wall. The sleeve 36 is stepped, as at 35, to engage the rim 20. When pressure is exerted on the shoulder rest, the arms pivot about the rim 20 and the wider portions of the sleeves 36 are withdrawn from the side wall which is then free to vibrate without damping. The elements 31, 32 may each be formed from a piece of wire 14 bent as shown in Fig. 1. This element is secured to the plate 33 by a rivet 7 engaging an eyelet formed by the wire 14 and a steel wire 23 which is passed through holes on the plate and twisted over the legs 8, 9 of the wire 14. A pad of velvet covered wood is fixed to the plate 33. The fingers of each element engage the violin body on opposite sides of a plane A-B passing through the widest part of the body. Specification 671,202 also is referred to.
