Abstract
In making golf balls or cores a rubber mix is moulded under pressure in a closed mould to cure the outer skin, the moulded article then being removed from the mix and vulcanized. A suitable mix comprises the following parts by weight:-ribbed smoked sheet rubber 100, zinc oxide 5, stearic acid 2, carbon black 100 or 125, sulphur 7, "Altax" (Registered Trade Mark) 1.5, selenium 0.5. Balls may be surface-hardened before final vulcanization by immersion, while hot, in a bath containing sulphur monochloride in a suitable solvent and then vulcanized and painted to give the final product. Cores are moulded in a mould having internal ribbing to give them peripheral grooves to form a key with a subsequently applied cover cut from white material, a suitable mix for which comprises butadiene-styrene copolymer 100 parts by weight zinc oxide 6, stearic acid 2, titanium dioxide 25, sulphur 6, "Altax" 1.5, selenium 0.5. The cover may be about 0.02 to 0.025 ins. thick.
