Abstract

In a method of manufacturing golf balls or the like of the kind embodying a core and an outer shell of guttapercha, balata, rubber or similar vegetable resin, a layer or successive layers of aqueous emulsions or dispersions such as those specified below are applied to the core by dipping, painting, spraying, moulding or electrophoresis so as to produce an outer shell of suitable thickness and thereafter moulding the ball in order to impart to it the desired shape and surface marking. According to one method, aqueous dispersions of guttapercha, 40 per cent, prepared according to Specification 296,685, [Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.], and of titanium white, 50 per cent, are mixed with rubber latex (concentration 60 per cent) and the mixture is painted on to a rubber-wound core, dried in warm air, the painting operation being repeated and the ball moulded and painted in the usual manner. In a further example, 75 parts by weight of disintegrated guttapercha are stirred into a mixture of rubber latex and titanium white dispersion (giving 25 and 5 parts by weight of rubber and titanium white respectively), together with lime until a crumb is obtained. The wet crumb is pressed round a rubber core, dried in warm air or in a porous mould and finally moulded and painted. Usual compounding ingredients may be added to the dispersions. The emulsions or dispersions, whether of a fine or coarse type, may be converted into stiff froths to reduce their fluidity and thus facilitate manipulation.
