Abstract

In a method of manufacturing golf balls and the like comprising a core and an outer shell of guttapercha or like material, the outer shells, for example hemispherical cups, are produced by consolidating in moulds, crumb-like or powdered compositions of organic materials such as those consisting of or containing guttapercha or balata with or without the addition of vegetable resins such as rubber, shellac or mineral rubber or rubber substitutes such as factice or rubber reclaim or rubber waste or oils, for example rape oil or vulcanized oils or cellulose esters, viscose or proteins, for example casein. Compounding ingredients such as sulphur or other vulcanizing agent, accelerators of vulcanization, colouring matters, preservatives and softeners may be added. The crumb-like or powdered compositions may be produced by mechanical disintegration of guttapercha or like substances, or by spraying aqueous emulsions or dispersions into a warm atmosphere, or by coagulation in the presence of a protective colloid as described in Specification 327,451, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.]. The crumb-like compositions are consolidated by heat and pressure and may be formed into hemispherical shells for subsequent application to the rubber core, or may be moulded directly on to the core.
