Class 126 A preformed throat unit for fitting in a fireplace opening between the top of the fireback and the flue, comprises front, back and side walls enclosing a duct converging upwardly and having its outlet set behind its inlet, and the front wall is recessed to leave a gap between the front of the unit and the top of a fireplace surround. The unit, which may be a single moulding of refractory material or may be in multi-section form, has a rectangular base forming flanges 15, 16 at the sides and front. The flat back wall 11 slopes rearwardly from the base, and the side walls 12 and front 10 are set back from the flanges and flare outwardly into the base. The duct 20 is a regular trapezium in cross-section, its parallel front and back converging towards the top, and the sides converging towards the back, and also converging upwardly. The back and sides are flat but the front flares outwardly near the bottom. The top of the back and side walls are level, and the front wall extends above them to form a ledge 21, which supports the brickwork immediately over the fireplace. The swept back front wall 10 affords a space between the throat and the surround. A bracket 25 for a fire guard may be secured by a bolt passing through a hole in the flare of the front wall. In a modification, Fig. 6, the outer face of the front wall 10 is vertical, and has a recess 26 to afford a space behind the surround. The crosssectional area of the throat inlet is at least twice that of the outlet, and an adjustable damper 28, Fig. 6, may be provided in the throat.
