601,923. Open fireplaces. GRAHAMSTON IRON CO., Ltd., MITCHELL, W. W., and BROWN, J. Nov. 6, 1945, No. 29475. [Class 126] In an open fireplace in which the firebrick back 2 and sides 1 of the fire chamber are formed with vertical flutes 3, 3A extending from the ashpit to above the grate 4, the fireback immediately above the fuel level is constituted by a brick 8 having fluted sides 8A, the flutes in the upper face serving for the passage of heated secondary air to the space above the fuel from a chamber 6 behind the brick 8. The chamber 6 receives air from the ashpit through flutes 3, 3A and aperture 5 and is connected at 6A to the chimney 7, a damper 9 being so arranged that when the opening 6A is closed the fireplace outlet 7A is open and vice versa.
