[Class 126] The grate of a hot water boiler normally fed with coke or other fuel of low volatility from a hopper 10 may be fed with coal or other highly volatile fuel on lifting a door 14 which carries a damper 15 allowing the combustion gases to pass around the hopper 10 to the chimney 18. A substantially continuous water jacket 6 extends above the grate to form the back and sides of the combustion chamber 5 and the sides of the water jacket are connected by waterways 8, 9 across the front of and above the grate. An adjustable damper 16 controls the escape of combustion gases at the rear of the chamber 5. Primary air is supplied to the ashpit through a frame 23 formed with slots regulated by a camoperated grid 27. The grate is fitted with bars 1, 2 which may be reciprocated relatively to one another by a handle 10. The capacity of the fire when burning bituminous fuel may be increased by the provision of an additional front grate 20. The sliding door 14 may be replaced by hinged doors coupled to mechanism operating the damper 15. The dampers and air valve may be controlled thermostatically.
