Class 126 A fireplace unit comprises a rectangular metal framework containing a metal casing or a fireplace surmounted by a metal plate and a flue extending from the casing or fireplace to the top of the framework, which is covered at its front and sides by panelling which serves as shuttering for concrete poured within the framework and a finish to parts of the unit projecting into a room. The framework is made of vertical steel strip or angle members 2, connected by horizontal steel members 5 at top and bottom and braced by diagonal members 13 at the top and a horizontal member 15 at the bottom. Further horizontal bracing members are provided at the front and sides and diagonal members at the front. An open fronted metal casing 20 is secured in the bottom of the framework and provides the fireplace opening. A cast iron, steel or fireclay flue 21 extends from the casing 20 to the top of the framework where it is secured by a strap 22 to the diagonal members 13. The casing 20 may be replaced by a conventional fireclay fireplace surmounted by metal plate which extends downwardly at the rear of the fireplace to the bottom of the framework. Shuttering 25, with a finished outer surface, is secured to the parts of the framework which are exposed in the room. The unit is secured against a wall, Fig. 3, not shown, or two units are secured back-to-back in a gap between the shuttering 27, 28, Fig. 4, defining a party wall. Concrete is then poured into the fireplace units at the same time as the concrete is poured to form the wall. The concrete fills the space behind the casing 20, or the vertical part of the plate over the fireplace so that a heat retaining concrete mass is formed behind the fireplace, and the flue 21 is embedded in the concrete.
