Abstract
711,832. Undercarriages. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS. Ltd. May 9, 1950 [Feb. 11, 1949; March 17, 1949], Nos. 3847/49 and 7356/49. Class 4 In a steerable undercarriage, including a pair of transversely spaced landing wheels which are normally constrained to rotate together, steering is effected by disturbing the balance of natural rotation, either by means of differential braking or by alteration of the relative diameters of the wheels without altering their relative speeds of rotation. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1 the wheels 4, 5 normally rotate together, being connected by a friction coupling comprising plates 17 pressed against pads 18 on the respective wheels, application of one of a pair of brakes 9 reducing the speed of the associated wheel and causing slipping of the coupling element. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the wheels are fixed to a common axle 21 which is tiltable by actuation of a jack 23 to alter the relative diameters of the wheel tyres. According to a third modification, Figs. 4A and 5, the undercarriage leg 1 is raked forwardly so that rotation of the leg is accompanied by alteration in the relative diameters of the wheel tyres as shown in Fig. 5.
