Class 78 (3) An apparatus for handling a coke oven door or the like When detached from its oven comprises a frame in which the door is pivoted for movement about its major axis and a bearing for the frame which allows it to swing about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the door pivoting axis. The door 1 is secured in the frame 2 which is mounted for movement about pivots 9 10 and trunnions 4; rotation on pivots 9, 10 being prevented when bolts 13 are extended into engagement with the hinge member 3. When the frame is raised into the vertical position the pivot 9 is automatically engaged by a latch 30 and is urged to the right by a spring loaded slide member 21 which embraces the spindle. On release of the latch by a handle 33 and cables 32, the slide moves to the right and carries the frame out of the vertical, whereafter it is lowered by a winch 15, acting through a cable 14, to the position shown in dotted line. In a modification, Fig. 6, for use with thick doors mounted at a low position in the oven, the frame carries a pair of trunnions 40 which engage open top bearings 40a in the base member 41 during the initial lowering through an angle a, and further trunnions 45 which engage open top bearings 44 during the final lowering through an angle b, a double hook member 46 being provided on the frame to engage one of its hooks beneath a stud 47 on the base member to retain the trunnions 45 in the bearings 44 during the initial lift through the angle b. The pulley 18 around which the cable 14 passes is mounted on the pivot 9.
