Abstract
1,070,883. Guiding loads during lifting. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 28, 1966 [Feb. 4, 1965], No. 4862/65. Heading B8B. An apparatus for moving an aero engine 10 from a mobile cradle 15 into an engine housing 13 comprises a guide means 35 detachably secured to the engine housing and depending therefrom, a manual hoist 23 adapted to lift the engine 10 and rollers 29 on the engine for engaging the guide means 35 during hoisting thereof into the housing. The guide means 35 comprising one or more rails bolted at 36 in end-to-end relationship and connected through limbs 37 and pegs 39 to lugs 38 on the housing 13. The rollers 29 engaging the rails 35 for horizontal stabilization of the engine during lifting, are carried by a support 28 detachably secured to flanges 30, 32 on the engine. The lifting cable 27 of the hoist 23 is hooked on to a ring 22 slidable or rollable along an arcuate rail 21 of a sling 20 detachably attached to the intake duct 18 of the engine. The ring 22 moves along the rail 21 as the engine is raised from the vertical position shown into alignment with the axis 13<SP>1</SP> in the housing. The hoist 23 is mounted on a tripod 24 detachably attached to the upper open end of the housing 13. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), one or both of the guide supporting links (37) are associated with screw means whereby the position of the engine can be adjusted once in the housing.
