Abstract
710,313. Particle accelerators. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 8, 1952 [May 31, 1951], No. 11683/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XL(c)] In a cyclotron in which the dee electrodes are connected to a parallel-wire transmission line energized by an electron discharge tube oscillator, the oscillator is inductively coupled to the line through an anode loop and a feedback loop arranged between the line conductors so as to assure that the line oscillates in such a mode that the desired electric field is produced across the dees. The oscillator preferably comprises a pair of electron discharge tubes arranged for pushpull operation with their anodes connected together by the anode loop and their cathodes connected together by the feedback loop. The feedback loop may however be a grid loop. The loops are each shunted by a tuning condenser to enable the adjustment of the relative phases of the voltages induced in them. The loops are adjustable in position. Where the line conductors as well as the dees are within an evacuable enclosure, the loops are carried on conductors slidably extending through hermetic seals. A tuning bar is provided for the transmission line.
