Abstract
<PICT:0709711/IV (a)/1> A yarn or thread of a linear polymer, such as a polyamide or polyurethane, is subjected to stretching between two roller systems which are preceded by a device which imparts a predetermined pre-tension to the thread, the first roller system consisting of a delivery roller and a loading roller which has a surface of an elastic material of high coefficient of friction, and the stretching conditions being such that no slipping of the thread over the delivery roller takes place. For non-slipping conditions, the value of the stretching tension S1 must be less than the limiting value given by the equation S1 = S2em 1a 1 + m 2a 2 where S2 is the pre-tension, that is the tension in the thread at the point of contact of the loading roller and the delivery roller, m 1 is the coefficient of friction between the thread and the loading roller, m 2 is the coefficient of friction between the thread and the delivery roller, and a 1 and a 2 are the angles of contact between the thread and the loading roller and between the thread and the delivery roller. As shown, thread is taken from spool 1 and passed round thread-brake 2, guide-roller 2a, loading roller 3, delivery roller 4, stretching roller 6, and guide-roller 5, and is finally wound on spool 7. The loading roller has a covering of an elastic friction material such as cork, rubber, or a synthetic plastic material. The roller 4 may be driven at a peripheral speed of 50 metres per minute and the stretching roller 6 at a speed of 200 metres per minute. Roller 3 is driven by non-slipping friction from roller 4. The point at which stretching begins is preferably beyond the point of contact of rollers 3 and 4. The delivery roller may have a surface of polished chromium, and when treating a polyamide thread the coefficient of friction with such a surface is nearly the same as with a rubber surface. Alternatively, both delivery roller and loading roller may have a surface of rubber. The pretension may be 5-20 per cent. of the stretching tension.
