Abstract

Twisted or untwisted, multifilament, nylon yarn at elevated temperature, as may be due to prior passage (under low tension) over and in contact with a convex heated plate, is drawn through the nip of a pair of loaded pressure rolls in such manner that the forward motion of the yarn imparts the rotary motion to the rolls. Drawing may be effected by the wind-up apparatus e.g. a coning or ring-spindle mechanism. A third roll, itself driven by the forward motion of the yarn, may drive the pair through gearing, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). The filaments may be deformed and so that their cross-sectional shape varies randomly along their lengths. The treated yarn may be woven, as warp and/or weft, or knitted e.g. in the welt of a stocking, into fabric which thereby displays "crackiness" i.e. randomly distributed, short, dark lines.
