[Also in Group XIII] In an open-hearth furnace having at each end a regenerator chamber 3 (see Group XIII) dis posed in a concrete trough 7 and a slag chamber 4 sited on a concrete slab 8 a system of air cooling ducts is arranged at the joints between the concrete and the adjacent brickwork. Vertical ducts 10 having their upper openings protected by screens 25 and horizontal ducts 11 are interconnected by a duct 12 encircling the base of the regenerator chamber 3 said duct 12 being connected to an air shaft 16 by downwardly sloping ducts 15, and horizontal ducts 21 below the slag chamber 4 running transversely of the furnace are connected to the vertical ducts 10 in the adjacent wall of the regenerator chamber. The air shaft 16 is covered by a plate 17 with a grate 19 disposed over a dust collector 18 and the bottom of the air shaft serves as a sump for any water seeping into the cooling system. Convection currents set up in the vertical ducts normally ensure sufficient circulation of cooling air from the shaft 16, but forced draught may be used. The air ducts may be formed in either the concrete, the adjacent brickwork or partially in both, and in the case of the vertical ducts they may be bounded laterally by the buckstays provided round the regenerator walls.
