Abstract
705,968. Handles for portable containers. FEAVER, Ltd., J., and WAYLETT, C. W. Nov. 13, 1952 [Nov. 23, 1951], No. 27574/51. Class 66 A bail handle mounting for a sheet metal can comprises a boss 2 formed in the wall 1 of the can, a stamping 3 with a dished portion, and a rivet securing the dished portion to the boss so that a bail handle 5 pivotally mounted on the stamping 3 is free to turn and spaced apart from the can wall. The boss 2 is preferably -pressed inwards into the can wall and the dished portion made a close fit within it as shown in Fig. 1. However, where it is required to provide a lid retaining clip 8 free to rotate about the junction of the boss and the dished portion of the stamping and clear of one side of the tin it is necessary to press the boss outwards as indicated in Fig. 2. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), the stamping is substantially cup-shaped and its dished portion riveted to the boss 2 as in the case of Fig. 1 but the handle 5 is formed with a loop fitting round the cylindrical body part of the stamping and retained by the rolled rim 11.
