Abstract

697,611. Vices. GARTHWAITE & SON, Ltd., E. F. Aug. 29, 1951 [June 9, 1950], No. 14451/50. Class 61 (ii). In a vice, a cam 15 mounted on the base to turn about a fixed axis imparts clamping movement to the movable jaw 5 through a thrust transmitting rod 12, 13 which has screw threaded engagement with the movable jaw to provide initial adjustment. The jaw 5 is carried by a block 6 slidable on a raised platform 2 on the bed 1 and is connected by webs to a plate 7 mounted to travel against the underside of the platform. A tension spring 9 connects the plate 7 to the distant end of the bed. The thrust rod has a threaded portion 12 screwed into the block 6 and is provided with a manipulating nut 14. The other end of the thrust rod is slidable and rotatable in a cam housing 10 secured to the platform 2. An eccentric-shaped cam 15, mounted on a vertical pin 16 on which is mounted the hub part 19 of a handle, is provided with an upstanding pin 18 engaging a hole in the hub. Partial rotation of the handle causes the cam to impart suitable travel to the jaw 5.
