Abstract

692,366. Photo-mechanical printing surfaces. TOLAND, W. C., and HAMILTON, M. H. Oct. 19, 1950, No. 25476/50. Class 98 (ii). [Also in Group XVI] A lithographic printing plate A comprises a flexible base member 10, and a thin hydrophilic coating 12 of colloidal material bonded to the base member, the coating including at its exposed surface area relatively hard greasereceptive printing portions, and relatively yieldable water-receptive non-printing portions, a water-soluble organic dibasic acid in the form of a finely-divided solid being incorporated in the non-printing portions of the plate and being operative in the presence of mixture applied to the plate to repel adhesion of small amounts of greasy ink to the non-printing portions when the latter are contacted by an inking roller. The dibasic acid used may be oxalic acid, tartaric acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid, or malonic acid, and the hydrophilic coating comprises a colloid selected from the group comprising polyvinyl alcohol, gelatine, gum arabic, Irish moss, and water-soluble cellulose. A halftone plate made by the albumic process may be produced by coating the plate with albumin and ammonium bichromate and subsequently exposing the plate to actinic light passed through a photographic negative and intervening screen. The unexposed portions of the albumin are subsequently dissolved away, leaving the printing image 14.
