Class 120(i) For piecing up sliver in a lap winder, drawing frame or the like, a free leading end of sliver from a reserve supply is placed in a first position for access thereto by the tail end of a sliver feeding from a depleted supply, the reserve sliver end is retained loosely in the said first position beneath and in alignment with the normal travel of the feeding sliver end, and the feeding sliver tail end on depletion or breakage is caused to gravitate into overlapping wiping contact with the reserve sliver leading end so as to adhere thereto and draw the latter into the machine. As shown, an adjustable support bar 30 carrying a supplementary guide plate 32, and a reserve sliver end supporting bracket 40 having upwardly directed sliver retaining pins 42, are secured to the known slotted guide plate 20 of a lap winder. In operation the ends of slivers A from full reserve cans 14 are passed through slots 22 in plate 20 and hooked on to the retaining points 42, while the slivers B fed into the machine from supply cans 12 pass through guiding openings 36 in plate 32 and slots 22. When any of slivers B breaks or is depleted, the free sliver end B drops down slot 22 against the sliver end A; the wiping action of sliver B over sliver A is sufficient to cause the two ends to unite so that sliver A is drawn forward into the machine. The operator can at his leisure replace the empty can, move can 14 to the outside position and place the new feeding sliver end in the slot 36, place a new reserve can in the inside position, and hook the end of the new reserve sliver on to point 42. The amount of overlap between the sliver ends is controlled by the distance guide 32 which is positioned from guide plate 20.
