Abstract

687,585. Ring spinning devices; doffing mechanism. T.M.M. (RESEARCH), Ltd., and HAYTHORNTHWAITE. J. J. March 30, 1951 [April 26, 1950], No. 10278/50. Class 120(ii) A textile ring spinning, doubling or twisting unit, comprises in relation to the spindle a package carrier member detachably mounted thereon with capability of relative aixal movement and providing a seating for the yarn package, means in or on said carrier member for catching the yarn or thread at the base of the package so as to hold the same taut when the reciprocating element of the unit has reached the doffing position, means for severing the tautened yarn or thread, the severing action being accomplished as the result of a relative axial movement between the carrier and the spindle and interceptor means for retaining said carrier member on the separation of the spindle and the ring such that the yarn package is supported with freedom for doffing. As shown a spindle 1 is rotatably mounted in a bolster 2 in a spindle rail 3 and has a wharve 4; and a ring 6 is carried in a ring rail 7 and has a traveller 8. Yarn passes from drafting apparatus (not shown) through guide 9 and traveller 8 to the package 5. Detachably mounted on the spindle 1 so that it rests on shoulder 10 is a package carrier member 11 having an axially bored cylindrical body, in the upper part of which is a deep external vee-groove 12 bordered by a flared rim 13 containing a notch 14. On the lower surface of the vee-groove 12 is a catch consisting of a short flat spring 15 having an upturned lip 16. At the base of the groove 12 is a lateral slot 17 extending to the bore of the body. Said carrier provides a seating 18 for the base of the bobbin upon which the yarn package 5 is to be wound. On the underside of the ring rail 7 are slidably mounted two parallel interceptor plates 21 and 22 having longitudinal slots 23 which co-operate with studs 24 to enable the two plates, which serve a plurality of spinning units, to be slidden endwise at appropriate times by mechanical means linked to a yoke attached to said plates. The plates 21 and 22 have oppositely disposed inward lateral extensions 26 in respect of each spinning unit. Each spindle is provided with a circumferential groove 27 which will register with slot 17 of carrier 11 and the upper edge of which is sharpened. In operation, after the completion of the package, the spindle rail 3 is raised to the doffing position, Fig. 4, when the yarn is caught by notch 14 and guided into the vee-groove 12 where it is drawn chordwise through slot 17 and is trapped beneath the lip of the spring 15. The interceptor plates 21, 22 are then slid along into a position in which the lateral extensions 26 are interposed below the flange 20 of carrier 11. The spindle is then withdrawn, the yarn in the slot 17 is cleared by the sharpened edge of groove 27 and the interceptor plates retain the package carrier 11 thereon and ready for doffing. If desired, doffing may be performed by lateral displacement of separator plates provided between adjacent spinning units and joined in the rear of each spindle. The casing of the machine may be pivoted as described in Specification 678,340, to form a hopper for the doffed yarn packages.
