Abstract

A roller suitable for use in printing machines, leather tanning machines, duplicating machinery, typewriters, textile machines, &c. is made by coating a central stock or core with adhesive (after degreasing if necessary), placing the core in an enclosed mould, evacuating air from the mould, admitting a fluid mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticiser, e.g. di-octyl phthalate, and heating the whole in an oven to convert the fluid mixture to an elastic solid forming the outer surface of the roller. The adhesive may be the composition described in Specification 569,666, and may be applied in two stages, first as a primer immediately after degreasing and then, immediately before use, as a main coating. The oven may have a temperature differential within its heating space of less than 2 DEG C., and is gradually heated to about 160 DEG C. The roller surface is machined and ground. The stock or core may be of metal or wood.
